Over 20 million Americans practice yoga. This year, on June 21, people all over the world will gather to celebrate the United Nations’ second International Day of Yoga.
The first International Day of Yoga, in 2015, had yogis all over the world taking to the mat to show their love of yoga. India set the record for the biggest yoga class ever with 36,000 people participating in one place, according to Time magazine. An estimated two billion people took part in the celebration.
The local event is Yoga in the Park, at French Landing Park, 12090 Haggerty Road, Van Buren Township 48111. The park is located on the west side of Haggerty Road, just south of I-94 and the I-94 South Service Drive.
The class, presented by Van Buren Parks & Recreation, is held every Saturday all summer long, 8-9 a.m. Wear loose or stretchy clothing and bring a mat.
This is typically a donation-based class. Participants can attend on Saturday, June 18, at no charge.
Whether you are an experienced yoga practitioner, or looking to experience yoga for the first time, you are invited to join in.
Yoga embodies unity of mind and body, thought and action — a holistic approach that is valuable to our health and our well-being. Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and with nature.
