More than 900 letters recently were sent out to taxpayers in the city of Belleville inviting them to a meeting at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 15, in the cafeteria of Belleville High School to discuss fixing their streets.
A large meeting room was sought out because it is believed a large crowd of taxpayers will be interested in what it is going to cost them to get their streets fixed.
The estimated cost to fix all the streets in the city is about $10 million, so this means the taxpayers are going to have to help. The informational meeting with lots of maps and charts will tell the condition of the streets and residents will be invited to check out their own streets.
Based on a pavement evaluation recently completed, “the city is looking into multiple avenues of financing to address all streets in the city within a three-year improvement program,” the letter stated.
The city council wanted a meeting of taxpayers so members can judge whether they will support an additional tax.
