At about 12:48 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, a 57-year old female pedestrian died after being struck by a box truck along the I-94 North Service Drive, between Morton Taylor and Belleville roads.
Van Buren Township Deputy Public Safety Director Jason Wright said the female was walking with her 25-year-old son at the time of the incident and the son was not injured.
There has been no determination made as to fault and this event remains under investigation, Wright said. A Nixle alert was sent out asking motorists to avoid the area, he said, and just before 7 p.m. a Nixle alert said the roadway had reopened.
A channel 2 TV report showed the truck and it belonged to Dudek Heating and Cooling of Sumpter Township. The 48-year-old driver immediately stopped after the accident and called for an ambulance. He is upset, but cooperating with police, the report said.
VBT Fire Chief Dan Besson said the mother and son live in the area and motorists have see them walking together for years. The only witness to the accident besides the driver is the son, who is believed to be mentally challenged.
Police ask for anyone who saw the accident to contact them.
