On Saturday, May 14, local residents are encouraged to clean up the shoreline around Belleville Lake.
Volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the vacant lakefront lot on North Liberty Street near Fifth in the City of Belleville.
Organized by the BYC, volunteers come from family, friends, schools, and clubs in the local community.
The “Belleville Lake Beautification” project volunteers, led by BYC Team Captains, scour the public shoreline for trash, from plastic water bottles and bait containers to scrap wood and abandoned fishing gear.
The volunteers walk the shoreline, under the bridges, in the water at shore, and land by boat in areas not accessible from the roadway. They fill trash bags with paper, plastic bags, and Styrofoam cups left by the winter storms and lake visitors. Gloves, bags and some garden tools are supplied.
Following the cleanup, the volunteers will be treated to a picnic lunch. Commemorative T-shirts will be available for the first 100 volunteers.
The Belleville Downtown Development Authority and the City of Belleville cooperate and help with the project. They have requested court workers to help pick up the filled bags. Last year they paid for a dumpster and got US Ecology to donate gloves.
