Van Buren Township Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery that was foiled when the cashier couldn’t open her cash drawer.
VBT Police Captain Gregory Laurain said a black male wearing a white hooded sweatshirt, a brown vest over the top and red sweatpants, entered the store at 2041 Rawsonville Road just before 1:57 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25.
Cititrend is the business at that address in the Lakewood (Kmart) Shopping Center, the former location of Rite Aid.
Captain Laurain said the man stated he had a gun and then brandished a semi automatic pistol to the cashier. The cashier attempted to log in to her cash drawer, but apparently entered her employee number incorrectly, which locked her out of the cash drawer.
Laurain said when the man saw this, he ran out of the store without further incident in an unknown direction.
VBT Police are reviewing video footage from the incident as the investigation continues.
