VBT Police Dept. issues scam alert after resident receives fake check

The Van Buren Township Police Department issued the following alert on Jan. 11.
“BE AWARE: A resident received this envelope in the mail, inside was a check for over $3,000. It included instructions to deposit the check, and to purchase gift cards with a portion the funds, and as a gift — keep the remainder for yourself.
“Sounds too good to be true? It is. This is a type of scam, so please don’t fall victim to the gimmicks. Disregard any mail, and ignore any phone calls and electronic communications that promise you free money.”
