Van Buren Township Clerk Leon Wright announces that his office will be running the election for the Belleville High School Student Council, with “real” printed ballots and voting machines, from 7:40 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. on May 14.
“I’m very pleased to announce this opportunity to partner with Van Buren Public Schools,” Clerk Wright said. “I, along with my staff, have worked very hard to put this on and we’re very excited.”
Last year and this year Clerk Wright visited government classes at the high school to give presentations on what he does as a clerk and how elections are run. He said the opportunity for students to take a real ballot and go into a real voting booth should encourage them to become regular voters in the future when they come of age.
Students also have the opportunity to sign up to work at the regular township elections.

Who is paying for this? Is this coming out of the Van Buren Township taxpayer’s pocket? Seems like double dipping. We are paying taxes for schools, and paying taxes for the township. This isn’t going to be free, and I’d like to know what the real cost will be.
Salaries are already paid for the Township clerk and the teachers. So the cost would be for photocopies of ballots if unused ballots from the last election can’t legally be used. What is the REAL cost of low voter turnout?
Our clerk solicited donations from local service organizations to cover the cost. It will not cost the taxpayers one penny. To answer your question about knowing the real cost? The real cost is “Zero”.
