Tebria Taylor Vaughn, 14, won the 2020 Great Lakes Regional Dance Masters Teen Miss Dance title on March 8 at Romulus High School.
Tebria studies dance at P&P Dance Centre in Belleville, where Michelle Sypula is the director and owner.
At the contest, Tebria had to compete in five audition classes – ballet, modern, tap, jazz, and acrobatics. There also was a three-minute interview and a dance solo.
For her solo, Tebria performed an open dance routine entitled “Rise Up,” choreographed by Tiffani Stewart. Tebria had top scores in the audition classes as well as the dance solo.
She has been dancing since she was four years old. Her first dance experience began with the Ypsilanti Township Recreation Department with Chardae Burton. Later, at the age of eight, she pursued a more advanced dance training at P&P Dance Centre.
“One of the goals that I set for myself this year was to win the Teen Miss Dance Title,” Tebria said.
“It was my first year competing as a teen, so I knew it would be difficult. I worked very hard to achieve my goal. Ms. Tiffani is an awesome choreographer and always challenges me. She brings out the best in me and it shows in my performances,” Tebria said.
Tebria is an eighth-grade honor roll student at Lincoln Middle School in Ypsilanti Township. She is a member of the Junior National Honor Society.
She is the daughter of Brian and Teiryne Vaughn, younger sister of Jalen Fisher (who hit the game-winning shot in Division 1 boys basketball championship game for Ypsilanti Lincoln High School last month), and the older sister to Tiana Vaughn, a third grader at Childs Elementary School in Ypsilanti Township. Tiana also competed for the Petite Miss Dance title and received the top interview award.
Tebria will represent Michigan’s Great Lakes Regional Chapter 46 at the Dance Masters of America National Competition this July in Atlanta, Georgia.
