Voters in the Huron School District approved a $65,830,000 bond proposal in a special election on Tuesday, May 5.
Wayne County voters approved the 30-year proposal by 53.4% (with 1,302 yes votes), according to unofficial results. There were 1,134 no votes, with a total of 2436 votes cast in Wayne County.
A small portion of the Huron district falls in Monroe County. The proposal failed in Monroe County, with 3 voters approving and 8 rejecting it.
One precinct in Sumpter Township is in the Huron School District and the 111 who voted May 5 turned down the bond proposal with 61 no votes (54.95%). There were 50 yes votes (45.05%).
The bond proceeds from 2.17 mills a year starting in 2026 are for remodeling, including security improvements and re-equipping school buildings.
The school district serves Huron Township and portions of Romulus, Flat Rock, Brownstown Township, Sumpter Township and Van Buren Township along with that small area in Monroe County.
Also on the May 5 ballot was the proposed Monroe County Intermediate School District Regional Enhancement Millage Renewal Proposal. Voters in Sumpter Township’s precinct in Airport School District turned it down 26-20.
But it passed in Monroe County with 10,334 yes votes and 6,920 no votes, according to unofficial results. The 0.9866 mill tax will be levied for a period of five years, 2027-31.
