The eight candidates running for four seats on the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education have been invited to participate in a candidates’ forum at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22, at Belleville High School, 501 W. Columbia Ave.
The forum is being sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Northwest Wayne County and Belleville members of the league will take part as volunteers at the event.
The format for the event is as follows: Candidates will be allowed a one-minute opening statement, a one-minute response to questions, and a one-minute summation. The forum will be filmed and will be available on the website of the League of Women Voters (www.LWVnorthwestwayne.org) shortly after the forum.
A moderator from the League will read the questions, which can be written and submitted by the audience.
The League of Women Voters is a non-partisan, political organization whose purpose is to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation in government. The League does not endorse or oppose candidates or parties, but it does work to gather and distribute information to the public on candidates and their views.
The League has offered the candidates an opportunity to participate in its print and on-line voter guides by submitting their views to share with the public free of charge. The Voter Guide is available at www.VOTE411.org .
Candidates running for the four-year terms on the school board in the Nov. 8 election are:
• Victor De Libera, 44723 Greenbriar, Van Buren Township;
• Susan K. Featheringill, 50385 S. I-94 Service Drive, Van Buren Township;
• Darlene Loyer Gerick, 47675 Martz Road, Van Buren Township;
• Keith L. Johnston, 39848 E. Huron River Drive, Van Buren Township (Romulus mailing);
• Brent Mikulski, 48792 Fifth Ave., Canton Township;
• Kelly A. Owen, 42607 Maude Ct., Van Buren Township;
• David Peer, 2511 S. Grove St., Ypsilanti Township; and
• Simone Pinter, 48496 Ellen Court, Van Buren Township.
The seats to be filled are now held by Brent Mikulski, Kelly Owen, Kathy Kovach and Martha Toth.
