Sumpter Township Police and Fire were dispatched to a single-vehicle, rollover accident at about 4:39 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, on Sumpter Road, north of Wear Road.
Two of the three occupants of the vehicle were ejected, including the severely injured 30-year-old male driver from Monroe who was flown to the University of Michigan Hospitals by U-M Survival Flight.
A passenger, a moderately injured 21-year-old female from Monroe, was also ejected and was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital by Huron Valley Ambulance.
A second passenger, a 27-year-old male from Clayton, was also transported to St. Joseph Hospital by HVA. He had minor injuries and was the lone occupant not ejected from the vehicle.
Sumpter Township Police Captain Eric Luke said the investigation has shown that the vehicle, a 2008 black Chevrolet Cobalt, was traveling northbound on Sumpter Road and lost control.
The vehicle crossed over into the southbound lane and struck the ditch before going airborne and spinning several times on a vertical axis, ejecting the two.
Sumpter Township police were assisted on the scene by a traffic crash reconstruction unit from the Michigan State Police. The investigation is on-going but speeding and alcohol use appear to be contributing factors, Captain Luke said.
Sumpter Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Van Buren Township Fire Department.
