Tuesday, Aug. 2, is Primary Election Day and the polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
In Van Buren Township all the candidates on the ballot are Democrats, so the winners of the primary will most likely win in the Nov. 8 general election.
One non-partisan candidate will be an addition to the race for four trustee seats on the Nov. 8 General Election ballot.
In a primary election, voters may vote either Republican or Democrat, but can’t cross over on partisan candidates without spoiling the ballot.
The Democrats for township offices in Van Buren Township are:
• For supervisor: Phillip C. Hart, Brenda McClanahan and Kevin McNamara;
• For treasurer: Sharry Budd and Harry R. Roesch;
• For clerk: Incumbent Leon Wright is unopposed;
• For four trustee seats: Sherry A. Frazier, Kevin Martin, Reggie Miller, Albert Ostrowski, Paul D. White, and Anthony Woodford.
In Sumpter Township there is one Republican running for township trustee. The rest are Democrats:
• For supervisor: John W. Morgan and Jay Bardell, II;
• For treasurer: Lydian May Graber and Alan Bates;
• For clerk: Deb Callison, Clarence J. Hoffman, Jr., and Esther Hurst;
• For four trustee seats: Jerry Anderson, Jr., Don LaPorte, Peggy Morgan, Matt Oddy, Jennifer Price, Ronald Barrington Robinson, Jane Stalmack, and Don Swinson. On the Republican side of the ballot, Tim Rush is running for trustee.
In Van Buren Township, Kristy Pagan, a Democrat, is running for reelection as State Representative in the 21st district, with Derek Moss on the Republican side of the ballot. In the 12th district are Democrats Edward F. Martell and Erika Geiss, with R. Erik Soderquist on the Republicant side of the ballot.
In Sumpter Township, Bill LaVoy, a Democrat, is running for reelection as State Representative in the 17th district, with Joseph Bellino, Jr. on the Republican side of the ballot.
Debbie Dingell, a Democrat, is running for reelection to Congress in the 12th district, which encompasses Belleville, Van Buren Township, and Sumpter Township. On the Republican side of the ballot she is opposed by Jeff Jones.
There are no Republicans on the ballot for Wayne County offices, so the primary election will determine the winners:
• For Prosecuting Attorney, Incumbent Kym Worthy is unopposed;
• For sheriff: Dickie White, Shelly L. Milton, and Benny N. Napoleon;
• For clerk: Adam Salam Adamski and Cathy M. Garrett;
• For treasurer: Eric Sabree and Beverly Kindle-Walker;
• For register of deeds: LaMar Lemmons, Riccardo R. Moore, and Bernard J. Youngblood;
• For county commissioner, 11th district: Incumbent A. Haidous is unopposed.
In the non-partisan section of the ballot, 21 candidates are running for four seats on the Third Circuit Court, non-incumbent positions.
There are two countywide proposals on the ballot: One for continuation of the Wayne County Parks Millage and one to renew the Wayne County Zoological Millage.
In Sumpter Township only there are also two proposals for renewals of police protection millages and one proposal for a renewal of the fire protection millage.
For more information on all of the candidates and proposals, see the election information put on line by the League of Women Voters of Northwest Wayne County at VOTE411.org .
The League recently held candidate forums for the Van Buren Township and Sumpter Township elections.
Recordings of those forums can be seen on the League’s website: LWVnorthwestwayne.org (in the “Calendar” section). Also, the League’s print voter guides are available at the Belleville Area District Library.

I went back and fourth on Supervisor but finally decided on McClanahan. Roesch for Treasurer and there is no question he is needed to turn around the issues are facing now and the future.
White, Woodford, Ostrowski and Miller. We don’t need the good old boy system any more.
Mike..Thank You for your support. If elected, I will work hard for the residents.
Paul
Sounds like you are paying attention to VBT Politricks.
MCCLANAHAN IS AN EXCELLENT CHOICE.
Mike thank you for your support it is greatly appreciated, and will not be taken for granted.
It is very important that people vote. I hope there is a good turn out to overturn the current board. We have got to make a change. I am right there with Mike except I don’t agree with Ostrowski. He skipped out on the candidate forum and offered no response. We need folks who take this seriously.
We need Brenda, Harry and Paul. Anthony you are my top pick for trustee. I believe you have good intentions and will be fair.
Irvin, the above mentioned 4 persons can and will work together to correct errors and move the township forward to approve actions necessary to benefit our residents. There has been numerous discussions with this group, and the ambition to work for the residents is the priority. Huge challenges face VBT, and the candidates chosen to be the next officials should be on the same page on resolving. Thank You for your support.
Too many poor decisions were made by folks who were from the King Team era. Now the Residents are being left holding the Bag! But they expect us to Re-elect them. Only a idiot would continue to keep them in office and think thier will be different results. One such person has the audacity to ask to be elected and does not have the common curteous to show up at forums or meetings and sleeps on the Job. Another Person is asking to be elected and insults our intelligence, just moved into Township to get the Job cause he couldn’t get elected elsewhere. I certainly don’t want somebody else’s garbage. I also don’t want somebody who thinks its ok to reduce the Pay for our Public Safety Department. They need to be paid a good wage and they definitely need good benefits. I heard them all at Forum. Most of them sounded like they running for Jr. High student Council. But one thing is clear we need to make a Serious Change. I refuse to elect folks who make Drastic Mistakes, they don’t know how to fix the problem other than raise my taxes.
JoC ~ I think our public safety department is getting paid very well. Do you read the posted wages annually in the paper? In comparison to other departments around the state, VBT ranks 3rd top paid. 3rd in the state! The Public Safety payroll is out of control and nobody on the board has the guts to do anything about. Serious changes need to be made.
To Charles Tackett: Your candidate Mr. McNamara has won. Now he wants to raise our taxes to pay for the king team mistake….go figure!!!
