Planet Fitness applied for a building permit and was approved to work on the inside of the former Farmer Jack building on the North I-94 Service Drive, just west of Belleville Road in Van Buren Township.
Ron Akers, director of the VBT Planning and Economic Development Department, said last week that the former grocery store that has been vacant for 20 years will have Planet Fitness in three quarters of the building and 13,000 square feet left vacant.
He said the owner of the property is seeking tenants for the rest of the building.
The plans are to work on the inside of the building this winter and to update the exterior and façade in the spring.
Since the only work being done now is on the inside, the project was approved administratively and did not have to come to the township planning commission, Akers said.
He said many people have voiced concern over the vacant Farmer Jack and he and his department have been working with the owner to fill the space.

Thank you Planet Fitness!! The residents will be very pleased to see this run-down building be utilized. Wow, vacant for 20 years, hopefully it can be made habitable again. This is great news and our gratitude to Mr. Akers and his staff.
