Jim Patton, 68, of Van Buren Township, was out jogging at about 3:24 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, when he was hit by a green, 1995 F-150 pick-up truck. And, the truck kept on going.
Van Buren Township Police Lt. Charles Bazzy said the accident happened in front of 49510 West Huron River Drive.
He said after the driver left the scene, the driver called a friend and the friend called police and the man was taken into custody. He was held 12 hours and released pending the results of toxicology tests by the Michigan State Police lab.
Lt. Bazzy said the driver was a 35-year-old male from Cement City, MI. He said the dispatch callout for police was to assist the fire department. The actual call turned into arresting someone operating under the influence of drugs.
Lt. Bazzy said the police report listed injuries to the jogger as laceration to the head and injuries to the chest, upper right arm and upper right leg.
In a family Facebook page, Patton’s injuries were listed as six broken ribs, collapsed lung, broken humerus in right arm, broken femur in right leg, and large gash on head. He had surgery the night of the accident and a second surgery was scheduled for Aug. 31.
Patton is grandfather of Belleville’s reigning Strawberry Queen Ryann Patton.
