The Belleville Area Museum planted the first Rosie the Riveter Floribunda Rosebush garden in southeast Michigan on June 28.
Ten original Rosies and their families along with friends and tri-community leaders gathered for the planting ceremony. Those present included Belleville Mayor Kerreen Conley, Sumpter Deputy Supervisor Karen Armatis, and Van Buren Township Trustee Sharry Frazier.
Also in attendance was American Rosie the Riveter Association President Donnaleen Lanktree, Michigan Chapter representative Jeannette Gutierrez, and Indiana Chapter President, Angie Timan-Morthland.
Visitors may view the memorial garden that is located on Roys St behind the old Van Buren Township Firehouse and directly across from the Chase Bank drive-through window. A special Rosie the Riveter exhibit runs through September at the museum. Summer hours are 3-7 p.m. on Tuesday, and noon to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Friday. Admission is $2 each for adults and $1 each for students. Historical society members enter free.
The Rosie the Riveters Lunch Box Drill Team from the Yankee Air Museum will appear in the National Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C.
