A Veterans’ Memorial Day Commemoration was held under sunny skies May 29 at the Veterans’ Memorial in Belleville, with Tom Fielder and Cornell Anton telling the life stories of two of the local World War II veterans on the wall – Joseph Szoke and Aubrey “Red” Mills.
The names of the 46 local veterans who had died over the past year were read by Jacqueline Dalzell and Shelly Brown-Chudzinski of David C. Brown Funeral Home, and Pam Pepper tolled a bell for each name.
Representatives of the tri-community and Brown Funeral Home and Family Center laid wreaths at the memorial and the riflemen of VFW #4434 and PLAV #167 gave a 21-gun salute. Those present stood in an act of national unity to mark the 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day established by Congress for the National Moment of Remembrance.
