First United Methodist Church Food Closet is proud to announce a partnership with Meijer this spring to provide much-needed hunger relief to local families through the Grand Rapids based retailer’s customer-driven donation program “Simply Give.”
Each Meijer “Simply Give” campaign aims to replenish the shelves of more than 200 food pantries in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.
The program encourages customers to purchase $10 “Simply Give” donation cards, which are then converted into Meijer food-only gift cards and given to a local food pantry in the store’s community.
First United Methodist Food Closet will benefit from donation cards purchased at the local Meijer store on Belleville Road now through May 12.
On Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12, the purchase of a $10 “Simply Give” donation card will have a double bonus of $20 by Meijer’s making the donation $30.
“We encourage community members to help fulfill our mission of helping feed the hungry in Van Buren and Sumpter Townships and the City of Belleville by purchasing a Meijer “Simply Give” food donation card during their next shopping trip,” said Sandy Askew spokesperson for the First United Methodist Church Food Closet.
In 2013 the food closet distributed food to 7,038 in this community. Today’s food closets are in a desperate struggle to keep up with the flood of requests they receive daily, Askew said.
For the third consecutive year, Meijer has committed to donating at least $1 million to the 2014 “Simply Give” program.
