The only pay phone in Belleville may be shut down.
The Belleville Area District Library Board will consider shutting down the public pay phone on its porch at the Dec. 9 meeting of the board.
At Tuesday’s board meeting, board member John Juriga asked for the item to be placed on the next agenda because he questioned the need for the phone, which costs the library $78 a month. And, he said, it is dirty.
Library officials, however, said the phone is serving a purpose and people use it for various personal calls. They estimated 50-80 phone calls a month.
