On Sunday, Oct. 30, at 7:44 a.m., Van Buren Township police officers and firefighters were called to the 7800 block of Haggerty Road, just south of Ecorse Road, for heavy smoke coming from a residence.
In a press release sent out by Fire Chief Dan Besson, he reported police arrived first, confirmed a working house fire, and attempted to locate anyone that may be still inside the home.
Engine 2 arrived at 7:51 a.m. and discovered that the fire had penetrated the front windows and the front of the home was well-involved with fire.
Engine 1 and additional firefighters arrived moments later. Firefighters were able to quickly knock down the flames from the front of the home and entered the home in order to do an interior search for anyone that may still be inside, as well as looking for the source of the fire.
While searching the interior of the home in very smoky conditions a VBT fire fighter, a four-year veteran, fell through a hole in the floor on the first floor — catching himself with his elbows before he would have fallen completely through to the basement.
He was able to self-rescue himself along with some assistance provided by the crew that was with him. He was evaluated and denied any injuries. He was not transported to the hospital.
Fire fighters discovered no one was home at the time of the fire and that the hole in the floor was caused by a fire that had started in the basement and had burned through the floor joists above it.
An investigation is on-going but at this time the fire appears to have been caused by an electrical issue in the basement.
Additional resources were called to the scene to pump water out of the basement and secure the home. The rental home was turned over to homeowner Johnny Gambino who was in contact with his insurance carrier. Firefighters cleared at 11:34 a.m.
Police said what was growing at the house is under investigation.
