The Belleville Farmer’s Market at the Fourth Street Square in downtown Belleville has begun its second year and this year it will be open every Monday from 4 to 7:30 p.m.
And, this year it has sponsors — Twisted Rooster and Kona Ice — so it is livelier than ever.
Janet Millard, event coordinator of the Belleville Central Business Community, said the Farmer’s Market actually started in October 2016, when a Harvest Market was set up to run with other Harvest Fest activities.
She said people liked it and the Harvest Fest committee wanted it to continue, so she took the idea to the CBC, which approved it. Millard was in charge and she set it up on the second and fourth Mondays of the month, running with the Monday car shows on Main Street.
But, people wanted it every Monday, so this year it is every Monday, although without the car show the first week. The car show got approval to continue on Main Street for the summer.
And, the CBC hired a market master, Shane Convery, the former BYC chef who brought his vegetables to the market in 2017. He now works for the Ann Arbor Sheraton Hotel.
It’s early in the year for many vegetables — except greens and peas — to be brought into the market, but Twisted Rooster brings food, T-shirts, and hats every other week, and Kona Ice has its icy treats every week.
So far, vendors have brought flowers, jellies, and crafts, with soaps and bath products coming soon. As the summer progresses and the crops ripen, more vegetables will be coming, Millard said.
The Fourth Street Square is located at 405 Main St., between the Bayou Grill and Egan’s Pub.
