On June 27, the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to support a two-mill property tax for six years on the Nov. 8 general election, to earn money for the 33 school districts in the Wayne County RESA system.
The taxpayers in the VBPS district would pay more taxes than their school district could get back, but it still would be more than they had to begin with.
It’s a hard time for tax payers this year.
The Belleville Area District Library will be seeking a bond and millage for operations, also on the Nov. 8 ballot. The Van Buren Township Public Safety Department is expected to seek at least four mills of renewal – possibly up to six mills – Nov. 8.
Then there are millages for the Zoo and DIA, along with a regional transportation system this season. And, county parks.
A local, very successful, Realtor told the Independent on Tuesday, “People don’t have the money for all this. They are going to say no.”
We expect the renewals for police and fire service in Sumpter Township to be approved on Aug. 2 without a problem, but we’re not so sure about the other requests.
Other tax proposals are in the wings, including the City of Belleville’s street program.
As we’ve been told – and really notice ourselves – people don’t have the money.

There is no way people are voting yes for the schools or the public safety increase. There were far to many issues that haven’t been resolved. This current administration will be lucky to even get a renewal.
I agree on not voting for any increase to a millage during our current economic climate. However, I fully support the renewal of current Educational and Public Safety Millage requests.
I got a post card advertisement in the mail over the weekend and it had Linda Combs endorsing McNamara. If this is true, I won’t touch McNamara with a 10 ft pole. Can someone confirm this? If he is a savvy businessman, he wouldn’t want her near his campaign either. She is the worst Supervisor in VB history. I share that opinion with many others.
You are correct Mike, the current supervisor did not like the options for who was running for supervisor so she contacted K. McNamara and asked him to run. This has caused a huge rift between her and heart and between heart and k.m. It is well known in the community that bud, jarr and heart talked the current supervisor into running for office not because she was so qualified but because they wanted paul out, because he refused to be pushed around by bud. The current supervisor ended up not being as much of a puppet as they would have liked and she became frustrated with having to base decisions on who bud likes and doesn’t like. Those 3 manipulated Linda into running for office, giving hart time to retire from Ford Motor Company. She ended up not being as much of a puppet as they would have liked and so she’s been cut loose since she’s served her/their purpose. She was chewed up and spit out and now she does not want the township in the hands of the likes of heart.
I will vote for McClanahan for the reasons of integrity, honesty and strength of character but mostly because she is not a political machine.
Thanks for the clarification. McClanahan has most likely won my vote but I am still nervous about her because of her affiliations. I guess I will believe what she says and pray for the best.
Hart can just go somewhere and retire, not many people respect him. He needs to move away from politics. He is very one-sided. Budd is the worst of all. There is a heavy push for Roech to come in and up end her. I think this is the change van buren needs right now.
The heavy push to “up end” the reign of bud as treasurer will be a huge improvement for this community. It won’t take long to see the improvements as she has been an obstacle standing in the way for many years. With her absence Van Buren Township will finally be untied from the stranglehold she’s had on this community.
