A proposal was passed at the most recent Van Buren Public Schools Board meeting to update the security cameras throughout Belleville High School. This update was a desperately needed maintenance item and is the second phase after the upgrade of the parking lot cameras was finished.
The building is 14 years old and the cameras are as old as the building. There have been advances in surveillance equipment since the current system was installed. Some of the cameras are no longer functional as well. Gone are the days that dummy cameras were installed just for show and did not actually record anything as was the case in the old BHS.
The new cameras that are being installed are state-of-the-art and will provide a clearer image and increased coverage. They are being replaced on a one-on-one basis meaning there are not going to increase the number of cameras. They are designed to hook right into the current system and are functional immediately.
Some of the cameras will be upgraded from a single-lens to a multi-lens which will allow for cameras to see more than they did before.
A functional security system is a must in this day of school shooters and vandals. The new security cameras will deter threats from outsiders, staff and students.
We should thank the board for making sure our students, staff and visitors are safe in BHS.
