In April of 2024 the Belleville Area District Library tried out a new program – Memory Cafes.
The first event was a hit, so the library added a couple more, and the program grew from there.
Now the Memory Cafes are a monthly staple, where those with memory issues and their caregivers and loved ones can come to socialize, snack, create, chat, and have a wonderful time.
The programs last for about two hours and are held the third Wednesday of each month starting at 11 a.m. in the Cozzad Room at the library. Each cafe has a theme, and includes interactive activities related to that theme, including conversation starters, group sharing, and games, plus an art project. There is usually a curated playlist of theme related music playing in the background.
Thanks to a great team of library employees, volunteers, and attendees, every Memory Cafe so far has been a big success. Kathryn Wood – artist, retired activities director for memory care facilities, and member of BACA – has generously volunteered her time and expertise to create art projects for each cafe. Most of these are “community” projects. They are designed so that each participant makes a part (appropriate to their abilities). Then Kathryn assembles the parts into a beautiful whole, which is displayed in the library lobby.
Library employees Lori Ann Najduk, Haylee Seefeld, and Jennifer Richardson all help make sure things run smoothly by preparing materials, organizing the snacks, and mingling and participating in the activities with the attendees.
The Friends of the Belleville Area District Library support the project by providing snacks and supplies.
If you or anyone you know might benefit from this program, you can call the library at (734) 699-3291 for more information, or stop by at 11 a.m. on the third Wednesday of the month.
