A story that needs correction was never seen in print in the Independent. It was at the end of a long Court Watching story that was put on the Independent website on July 24. The original court report was so long that it couldn’t all fit in the paper, so we cut it off. The whole report, however, was put on the website.
The brief report in question read: “Tatanisha Reed, 41, was due for a preliminary exam on July 16. She was arrested in Van Buren Township and charged with delivering/manufacturing drugs and driving while license suspended. Officer in charge is Detective Jeff Gueli.”
We recently received an irate letter from TaTaNisha Reed, who is an attorney, demanding $10,000 because she was embarrassed by the report. It was dated Sept. 14 and said, “The damage to my reputation is irreparable.” Later she said was she representing a male client at 34th District Court that day.
Obviously, there was either an error in the docket or I misunderstood something I copied from the docket. Besides the money, Reed demanded, “a retraction by you [sic] newspaper of equal size and print and on a page equal to that of the one in which the false publication was made.”
I apologize for embarrassing Ms. Reed and misidentifying her. It was an honest mistake for which I am very sorry.
