The Belleville High School Varsity Bowling team had a wonderful season under the leadership of new Head Coach Cynthia Allison.
The Varsity boys had a season record of 12-4, the Varsity Girls 8-6, and the JV Boys 10-6.
You can ask any BHS Bowler and they can tell you that bowling is not just a simple recreational activity. To be a competitive bowler, an athlete must be disciplined, display good sportsmanship, perform accuracy with hand-eye coordination, prove mental toughness, and support team cohesion or the attitude of “we-ness” over me.
Coach Allison wants to highlight the academic success of the Bowling program before anything that was done on the lanes. The Varsity boys team had an average GPA of 3.66 while the Girls Team average GPA was a 4.01.
The pursuit of academic success, mutual respect, and emotional intelligence (life lessons) have been a focus for our bowling program. Coach treated her coaching and team as an extension of the classroom. She tried to teach her athletes to become well-rounded, great human beings as well as great bowlers.
Both the teams improved from last season by surpassing last year’s win totals. The girls were the Bowl for Burns Champions, runner-up in the Dearborn State & Regional Tune-Up Tournament, runner-up in the KLAA, and runner-up at the MHSAA Regional Tournament.
The Regional runner-up finish qualified them for the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals. Individually, Amber Spicer and Madison Thomas made All-Conference. Also, Amber Spicer ranked #2 and Erin Elwartowski ranked #7 at the MHSAA Individual Regional Tournament which qualified them for the State Finals in singles. Amber Spicer went on to make the Top 16 and earned All-State Status.
The Boys team members were Mark Voight Tournament Champions, Bowl for Burns Tournament Champions, Dearborn State and Regional Tune-Up Champions, KLAA Champions, and MHSAA Division 1 Regional 18 Champions, qualifying them for the MHSAA State Finals.
As for individuals, All-KLAA Bowlers were Andy Folks, ranked 1st, 209 average; Johnathan Hatcher, ranked 2nd, 208 average; and Carson Conley, ranked 8th, 190 average. Johnathan Hatcher performed extremely well at the MHSAA Individual tournament and became the Regional Singles Champion. Andrew Folks ranked 3rd and Carson Conley ranked 4th at Regionals which qualified them along with Johnathan for the State Finals. During league matches the Varsity Boys nearly bowled a perfect game with a 290 to put in the record books at BHS.
Coach Allison looks forward to many returning athletes next season and improving on this year’s championships and statistics. She gives many thanks to her fellow coaches, Richard Allison (Varsity Boys), Phil Roberts (Varsity Boys), and Doug Spicer (JV Boys). The team mantra will be: “Our potential is unlimited; Let’s go get it, Tigers!”
