New pedestrian bridge over I-94 to begin construction July 16

The Belleville Road pedestrian path over I-94 and its path lighting was discussed at a recent pre-construction meeting of the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Van Buren Township Downtown Development Authority Executive Director Susan Ireland was there and she reported the details at the DDA’s May 22 meeting.
The project consists of .35 mile of concrete shared-used path, bridge widening, concrete curb, gutter, culvert, sewer drainage, guardrail, steel sheet piling, steel piles, approach work and pavement markings.
In addition to the MDOT construction engineer, the project engineer is Mannik and Smith Group. Davis Construction was awarded the project.
• Project start date: July 16, 2018.
• Substantial completion: November 2018 with mid-June 2019 for grass.
• No traffic disruptions of any kind during Labor Day 3 p.m., Aug. 31, through 5 a.m., Sept. 4; or Thanksgiving 3 p.m., Nov. 21 through 5 a.m., Nov. 26.
• No traffic stoppages or lane closures during Thunder Over Michigan Airshow, Wayne County Fair, or four hours before or after all University of Michigan home football games.
• Both entrance ramps from Belleville Road to I-94 can be closed simultaneously for the purpose of setting bridge beams for two nights total.
• Maintain one lane on NB and SB Belleville Road at all times.
• Shoulder and turn lane closures are permitted continuously on the Belleville Road Bridge as long as active work is taking place.
• Median shoulder closures are permitted continuously on I-94. A right shoulder closure is not permitted while median shoulder/lane closures are in place.
• Single lane closures are permitted on the Belleville Road Bridge from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday through Friday during the week and 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday when active work is taking place.
• Traffic stoppages for the placement of bridge beams over I-94 must be conducted on one weekend between the hours of Friday from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following morning, Saturday from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following morning, and Sunday from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning and shall utilize law enforcement officials. Stoppages will be allowed for a duration of no longer than 15 minutes after which traffic shall be allowed to proceed until such time traffic has been free flowing at the speed limit for a period of five minutes. The contractor is responsible for contacting and coordinating with law enforcement.
