From 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, at Wayne County Community College’s Western Campus, the Michigan Alliance for Families will seek input from stakeholders about what services are needed in the Belleville and Van Buren Township areas.
The public is invited to the free community gathering of groups and individuals connected to the disability community and education system in Belleville and Van Buren.
Kenya Harper-Black, a Parent Mentor for Wayne County, said people who should attend are parents and caregivers of children, teens, and young adults with a disability or learning challenge; community agencies; community organizations; service clubs; school district employees; PTA; school board members; appointed and elected officials; and community members interested in the education of children and supporting families.
“Michigan Alliance for Families is planning our future work in Belleville and Van Buren,” said Harper-Black. “This stakeholder meeting will bring together families with children receiving special education and/or early intervention services for networking, dialogue, and planning and the members of the community that support them.
“To identify and meet the needs of families in Belleville and Van Buren, we need you, your ideas, and your support,” Harper-Black said.
She asks those interested to contact her to register for the event: (313) 557-8780; [email protected] ; or online at www.michiganallianceforfamilies.org/rsvp .
Harper-Black said to be good stewards of their funding resources, they need a minimum number of participants registered by the registration deadline (March 29) for the presentation to be held. She said to call or email to check the status of the event. If a person requires accommodations or materials in an alternative format, let them know as soon as possible.
Michigan Alliance of Families is Michigan’s federally designated Parent Training and Information Center and a Michigan Department of Education IDEA Grant Funded Initiative.
It provides information, support, and referrals for parents who have children (birth through age 26) who receive special education services. There is never any cost for families. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Education. For more information, call 1-800-552-4821.
