A semi tractor-trailer carrying U.S. Mail from Detroit to Ypsilanti was heavily damaged by fire in an early morning incident Thursday, July 14, on I-94 between Haggerty and Hannan roads.
Van Buren Township fire officials said the fire started around 4:30 a.m. and caused backups and westbound delays near an exit ramp at Haggerty Road until 9 a.m. when fire fighters cleared the scene. Traffic in the center and right lanes was affected.
There were no injuries, but the mail burned completely and the only thing left was the racks.
Romulus Fire Department was first dispatched and it was found to be in Van Buren Township territory, so Romulus turned it over to VBT and then stayed to help.
Sumpter Township Fire Department was called for mutual aid and was asked to bring its tanker truck. Sumpter brought 30,000 gallons of water and used it on the fire. Then it left to refill and when it got back the fire was out.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but is believed to be mechanical.
