At 10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, Belleville police officers noticed a traffic infraction at Five Points, made a U-turn, and stopped the car in Sam’s parking lot.
Belleville Police Chief Hal Berriman said when the officers approached the car, they smelled marijuana. They found a vapor pipe and more than $1,200 cash on the driver, he said.
In the trunk there was a backpack containing a coffee can with marijuana inside, more marijuana, and pills. Chief Berriman said there was a total of 260 grams of marijuana – more than half a pound.
On Tuesday, Chief Berriman said the 22-year-old white male with a Taylor address was released pending authorization of a warrant for his arrest. His car was impounded. Chief Berriman said the man did not have a medical marijuana card.
Chief Berriman said police found there was a warrant for the man’s arrest in North Carolina for selling marijuana but the North Carolina department wouldn’t extradite him.
Officer Kendra Rose and Reserve Officer Dennis Mowbray made the traffic stop and they were assisted by Officer Greg Beach.
