At about 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 30, Van Buren Township police officers assisted Washtenaw County Sheriff in a short vehicle pursuit, stemming from a shooting incident that occurred in the City of Ypsilanti.
According media reports, up to ten gunshots ripped into a building in the 500 block of South Hamilton Street. No victims were found, but the shooting prompted a lockdown at nearby Perry Early Learning Center, 550 Perry St.
Washtenaw County Sheriff’s deputies pursued the vehicle onto I-94 heading east and were joined by units from Van Buren and the Michigan State Police. Speeds reportedly reached 100 mph before the vehicle veered through the fence along the South I-94 Service Drive and crashed into the area east of Van Buren Park.
Two male subjects exited the vehicle on foot and ran into the park. Officers arrested one male without incident. No shots were fired at any point of the investigation, police report. Officers including Michigan State Police, Washtenaw County Sheriff, Van Buren Township Police, and multiple K-9 units checked the surrounding area for the second male without success.

Witnesses on the South I-94 Service Drive, that was cut off to through traffic after the crash and throughout the search, told the Independent they have never in their lives seen so many police cars in one place.
