Local residents, officials attend Sept. 18 EGLE public hearing on VBT toxic landfill license

A group of local residents attended the Sept. 18 public meeting and the required public hearing held at Wayne County Community College in Van Buren Township. The meeting was hosted by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to give community members a chance to learn about and provide input on the operating license for the hazardous waste storage and disposal facility on the North I-94 Service Drive. The public has until Oct. 31 to offer input before officials plan to approve the license. Many empty seats were available at this hearing, whereas in the past the meetings on the landfill were standing room only.
