A proposal to close the doors to Van Buren Township Hall on Fridays to set up a four-day work week for employees is under consideration by the township board. The employees would work ten-hour days, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Human Resources Director Nicole Sumpter presented it to the board as a proposal for discussion at the May 3 workshop. She said it’s because employees these days are interested in spending more time with their families and that would work with a three-day week end.
Supervisor Kevin McNamara reminded them 21 employees left last year. In working to replace them, the township interviewed a lot of candidates and a flexible work week was often discussed.
He said it would just be for three months as a trial to see how it worked. If it was to proceed there would have to be changes in the contract.
Everyone agreed the township hall had few visitors on Fridays and it was really dead in the afternoons. But Treasurer Sharry Budd said she’d feel better if the township hall didn’t close. She said people come in on Fridays to get permits for weekend projects and in tax season her office is very busy.
There is time to let your elected representatives know how you feel about shortening the work week. They’ll be voting on it soon, so don’t delay.

Seriously? It’s no wonder businesses can’t get and keep help. Pandering to those who want a long weekend is ridiculous and what’s next? Three day week? Public entities and there for the convenience of the public. Thanks Shari Budd for common sense which seems to be lacking across the board in VBT (and in the schools as well). You all have forgotten the reasons you were elected. To serve the public.
VBT Taxpayers should be aware of ELECTED OFFICIALS actions in office….Their Work Day should be until 5 PM every day,….FIVE days a week…….if they want to work only four days…….their pay should be reduced to reflect the reduced hours…….Residents eyes are on the Full Time elected officials…..we are not Wayne County….
Didn’t they close for 18 months for COVID? They are already difficult to get answers from, yes we would all love to not work. Snow days, COVID days, 2 weeks for Christmas. Hell can I get a discount on my taxes for only having a part time government.
The good thing is I will have 3 days to do work without permits now lol.
Why can’t the township employees take turns working a 4 day, ten hour a day work week? One week one person in each department gets to work a 4 day, ten hour day work week. Then the township offices would still be open on Fridays, and the employees would get a four day work week once in awhile, and still put in forty hours a week.
I have never seen a such a joke! I hope they all get voted out in the next election. What kind of leadership does the Twp. have ?
