A man was shot in the chest in the parking lot outside the Van Buren Township Walmart store just before 10 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, and the suspected shooter is in custody in the Washtenaw County Jail on an unrelated charge.
VBT Police Lt. Charles Bazzy said two men in their 20s were sitting in the suspect’s car during an illegal transaction when the shooting occurred. The victim got out of the car, called 911 and ran into the Walmart grocery store entrance for help.
Walmart employees and VBT responders rendered aid before the ambulance arrived. The victim was taken to a hospital and Lt. Bazzy said he is “fine for all intents and purposes.” The victim, however, refuses to cooperate with police.
Lt. Bazzy said the two were not from VBT, with one from Ypsilanti Township and the other from southwest of VBT.
He said they are “not nice people” and police are putting together something to bring those involved to justice.
Lt. Bazzy said police do not like this kind of activity in their township and they will make sure it stops.
