On Monday, Aug. 31, at about 5:25 p.m., Sumpter Township Police were called to the 40000 block of Harris Road on the report of a child being struck by a vehicle.
Sumpter Police Captain Eric Luke said police found a 19-month-old male toddler had been gravely injured. The child was treated by a Sumpter Township Fire Department crew before being transported to a nearby hospital by Huron Valley Ambulance.
Despite the life-saving efforts, the child succumbed to his injuries, Captain Luke said.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the child’s family during this difficult time,” Captain Luke said.
The vehicle driver, a 59-year-old Sumpter Township resident, stopped immediately and is cooperating fully in the investigation. The Sumpter Township Police Department was assisted on the scene by the traffic crash reconstruction unit of the Michigan State Police. No further information will be released at this time, Luke said.
