Court Watching: Koenig gets plea deal at Frank Murphy with probation, work detail

On March 23, Paul Koenig, 49, of Van Buren Township entered into a plea agreement at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice and was sentenced to a year’s probation, serving five days on a work program, and paying minimal fines and costs.
Koenig had been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (a dog) and assaulting or obstructing a public official on Aug. 28 in the 13000 block of Martinsville Road.
At the docket conference Koenig’s attorney Jason Goldman discussed the case with one of the lead prosecutors and the prosecutor agreed to dismiss the assault with a dangerous weapon charge, a felony.
Koenig then pled guilty to “attempted obstruction” which is a misdemeanor. The court granted Goldman’s request for immediate sentencing.
To form a factual basis to be convicted of attempted obstruction, Koenig stated on the record that he may have shouted a profane statement at the ordinance officer in an attempt to convince the ordinance officer to leave his property.
No mention was made of the dog that figured into the testimony of VBT Ordinance Officer David Schuler during the March 4 preliminary exam at 34th District Court.
