The Van Buren Township Police Department will be issuing warning stickers to cars in driveways that are blocking sidewalks.
On Friday, Public Safety Director Gregory Laurain said the township has been getting complaints about cars in driveways that are blocking sidewalks. People pushing strollers, in electric wheelchairs, and those walking dogs or just walking to have to go out in the street to get around the cars. This is unsafe, he said.
He said police officers will be putting stickers on such cars that will contain the date, time, and the officer’s name. Director Laurain said blocking sidewalks with a parked car is a violation of Michigan’s Motor Vehicle Code.
“We are looking for compliance,” Director Laurain said, adding they will be putting the warning stickers on until June 1 and after that they will start ticketing.
A neighbor who notices blocking of a sidewalk by a car in a driveway is invited to call the police department to report the car and, “We will take care of it,” Laurain said.
