At about 9 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 27, a woman who lives on the shore of Belleville Lake called Van Buren Township to report a deer who was out on the ice and couldn’t get to shore.
VBT Fire Captain Curtis Lundsford told Detroit media that it appeared the deer had been on the ice overnight. It was out about 250 yards from shore. He said it took them about 45 minutes to get the deer back to shore. Capt. Lundsford said it appeared to weigh about 200 pounds.
The woman reported when the deer got to shore and up the steep embankment near E. Huron River Drive, it stopped for a moment and looked back at the fire fighters before running off.
Lundsford said the fire fighters practice ice rescues regularly. The woman said she saw them riding across the ice on a machine and using a lasso attached to a pole.
