On May 9, Van Buren Township Clerk Leon Wright put on his fourth-annual student council election at Belleville High School to teach students about voting procedures and the responsibility of voting. This year he was assisted by VBT Trustee Kevin Martin, as well as Deputy Clerk Joanne Montgomery.
About 60% of the students participated and a total of 755 ballots were cast. Thirty new voters were registered and 20 election inspector applications were received.
Clerk Wright thanked Election Source for making the project possible with the donation of ballots, coding and equipment. Also assisting in the project were Belleville City Clerk Sherri Scharf, BHS teachers Connie Testorelli and Felicia Lasenby and the senior student council election workers.
