The Van Buren Township board of trustees met on Sept. 16 and approved a Limnological Assessment of Belleville Lake for a cost of $13,880. The assessment will tell the township what is happening and what problems are affecting the lake.
“Recently, the staff has done a leadership approach by certain residents regarding not only water quality issues about the lake, but also invasive plants which have started to spout up in certain areas of the lake.” Supervisor Kevin McNamara said.
The assessment promises to give the board a direction on where to start to fix problems with the lake, supervisor McNamara said. He said other lakes have found ways to filter out what is coming downstream.
In other business the board:
• Approved all policy updates for 2025: travel, purchasing, credit cards, policies and procedure manual, and the salaried benefits manual;
• Approved the Haggerty Park improvement project, not to exceed $200,000 from building and grounds capital outlay; and
• Heard Nicole Gerhart, Director of Recreation, inform the board on upcoming events, including Movie on the Plaza on Friday, Sept. 26. Activities begin at 7 p.m. and the movie begins at dusk, about 8 p.m. Also, Friday Fitness Class Free Demo Week is Sept. 29 – Oct. 2 at the Van Buren Community Center.
