At the May 10 meeting of the Sumpter Township Board of Trustees, Public Safety Director/Police Chief Eric Luke said the spring/summer newsletter that recently was mailed out from the township had an article published and it was not written by him, as it claimed.
He said the content was out of touch with Sumpter Township residents, adding it was found by an employee while putting together the newsletter. It was an article, dated 1997 from Chicago, and it portrayed that residents should have fear, he said.
Director Luke said that is not a proper article to be published for this community and residents should not be fearful.
The article was printed under the heading, “The Chief’s Corner, Chief Eric Luke.” At the end of the article, which continued on the next page, it said, “From the Sumpter Township Police Department.”
He stressed he did not submit that article for publication or write it.
