Drivers have seen the piles of railroad ties piled neatly along the railroad tracks over the past few weeks in Van Buren Township, the City of Belleville, Sumpter Township, and Augusta Township.
Now the work has begun to maintain the tracks and an announcement has been made that various railroad crossings will be closed from Wednesday, Sept. 12, through Friday, Sept. 14, as the work progresses.
Sumpter Township Police Chief Eric Luke said his department had been notified by the railroad on Tuesday that the crossing on Rawsonville Road south of Bemis was to be closed from 8 a.m. Wednesday through Friday morning. Drivers were advised to seek an alternate route.
He said police also were notified that many other crossings in the area will be closed at about the same time. Several in Augusta Township will be closed, along with the Elwell Road crossing in Van Buren Township and the South Street crossing in the City of Belleville.
