A 19-year old Ypsilanti driver was critically injured and his passenger killed when their vehicle left westbound Ecorse Road, struck a tree, and burst into flame Sunday evening.
Van Buren Township Police Lt. Kenneth Floro said in a news release that VBT Public Safety Department, Ypsilanti Township Fire Department and Huron Valley Ambulance were dispatched to the scene west of Denton Road at 9:41 p.m.
VBT fire fighters and HVA paramedics treated driver John Hagadom for multiple injuries and HVA transported him to the University of Michigan Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
An unidentified passenger in the vehicle was fatally injured in the crash.
The Ypsilanti Township Fire Department assisted at the scene with fire suppression and hazard control, Lt. Floro said.
A preliminary investigation by the VBT Accident Investigation Team revealed that a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling westbound on Ecorse Road when the vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree, and caught on fire.
Investigators are looking at speed and alcohol as potential contributing factors in the accident, Lt. Floro said.
The Accident Investigation Team is working with the Wayne County Medical Examiner to positively identify the victim.
Anyone with questions or concerns about the accident is asked to contact Lt. Floro at (734) 699-8915.
