A highly intoxicated, 42-year-old Van Buren Township resident was taken into custody by police after reportedly firing a long gun and a handgun from his residence in the 49000 block of Bog Road.
Van Buren Township Deputy Police Chief Joshua Monte said that at about 11:55 a.m. on June 25, township police responded to the scene following reports of a male subject firing both a long gun and a handgun from his residence.
Deputy Chief Monte said the caller reported that children were present in the area at the time of the shooting. The children fled to safety and sheltered in place.
He said responding officers quickly established a perimeter around the property to contain the suspect. Officers holding the perimeter observed the suspect exiting the residence and firing multiple rounds indiscriminately from the rear of the home using both a long gun and a handgun.
Assistance was requested from the Western Wayne Special Operations Team (SOT). The suspect later exited the residence and entered a vehicle parked in the driveway.
As special operations officers approached the scene, the suspect exited the vehicle and began walking back toward the house. Special operations officers made verbal contact with the suspect, who ultimately surrendered without further incident. He was taken into custody without injury.
Officers recovered both a long gun and a handgun from the scene, Monte said.
A follow-up investigation, including interviews with witnesses, confirmed that the suspect did not aim or fire his weapons at any individuals. No officers discharged their firearms during the incident, and no injuries were reported, Monte said.
He had two dogs that were in deplorable condition, police said.
Monte said the Van Buren Township Police Department would like to thank the community for their patience and invaluable support during this incident.
“We also extend our sincere appreciation to our law enforcement partners at the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Belleville Police Department, Sumpter Police Department, Michigan State Police, and the Western Wayne County Special Operations Team for their rapid and professional response,” Monte said.
Bog Road was closed between Hoeft and Rawsonville roads during the hour-long incident.
On June 27, Christopher Dean Roglaski of Van Buren Township was video-arraigned in custody by 34th District Court chief judge Brian A. Oakley on charges of discharge of a weapon, disorderly person, and two counts of animal cruelty on June 25 in Van Buren Township.
Judge Oakley scheduled his remote pretrial for July 17 and set personal bond at $1,000. The defendant is to have no contact with the protected parties.
