The Belleville-Area Independent won a feature-writing award in its category in the 2021 Better Newspaper contest put on by the Michigan Press Association.
The awards were announced on March 17. The 2022 contest begins Aug. 1.
The Independent competes in the Weekly Class C category for circulation 3,001 to 7,000.
The Independent won third place in the Feature Story category which had 43 entries and was judged by the Arkansas Press Association. The story “Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist swamped out in VBT fire” was written by Editor Rosemary K. Otzman and published in the June 3, 2021 issue of the paper.
The subject was J. Ross Baughman, who won a Pulitzer for photos taken in Africa in 1977.
First place in that category was won by Oceana’s Herald-Journal and second place by the Grosse Pointe News. The South Lyon Herald earned an honorable mention.
The Michigan Press Association said its annual Better Newspaper Contest allows member journalists, photojournalists, columnists, and designers to show off their best work. Each year, a state press association reviews thousands of entries submitted by Michigan newspapers and individual members. The increased competition inspires all journalists to produce better work, which in turn, nurtures stronger communities.
This year MPA journalists are judging the contest for the Colorado Press Association.
