GE volunteers lend a hand at Rawsonville Elementary School

Nearly 500 local General Electric employees from the Van Buren Township GE facility volunteered their time June 5 to make a difference in the community during the 5th Annual GE Community Day across the Detroit area.
This year, GE volunteers were spread out in teams at eight different sites across Metro Detroit working on:
• Gardening, laying mulch, painting and building playground equipment at First Step and Rawsonville Elementary School;
• Cleaning-up the shoreline at the Belle Isle Conservancy;
• Planting flowers, building vegetable boxes and building a retaining wall at The Children’s Center of Detroit;
• Gardening, painting and helping to beautify the Community Health and Social Services Center (CHASS);
• Assisting with neighborhood clean-up and building maintenance at the Ruth Ellis Center;
• Clearing brush, painting and performing light handy work at the Historic Fort Wayne; and
• Visiting with local heroes at the John Dingell Veteran’s Center.
“We’re proud to call Detroit home, and we’re always looking for opportunities to make a difference in the community,” said Paul Boris, GE’s Chief Information Officer for Advanced Manufacturing (AMSTC) and site leader for the Advanced Manufacturing and Software Technology Center.
“Today’s outreach in neighborhoods where our employees live and work is one of the many reasons GE employees feel inspired to come to work each day.”
Since opening the AMSTC in Van Buren Township in 2009, GE has hired nearly 1,000 employees in the Detroit area, volunteered more than 65,000 hours and issued more than $12 million in donations and employee matching gifts in Michigan, Boris said.
