For the first time in its 20 years of existence in Belleville, the annual, silent Life Chain demonstration at Five Points in Belleville brought loud, pro-choice protestors.
About 30 Life Chain participants were along the sidewalks, silently holding signs provided by the national Right to Life organization, promoting life for babies and opposing euthanasia for the elderly.
On Sunday, 10-15 protestors, wearing sunglasses and scarves to cover their faces, loudly protested Life Chain. Reportedly, the pro-choice protestors personally harassed an elderly Life Chain participant, as well as a younger woman with a sign.
Belleville Police were present and visible. On Monday a representative of Life Chain went to the police station to thank them for being present and watching over the demonstration, despite what their own thoughts may be on the issue.
Tiam Fox, organizer of the Life Chain demonstration, said the group prayed together both before and after the event on Sunday and felt protected from harm.
Life Chains were in place at communities across the country. In Belleville the demonstration was co-sponsored by Belleville Church of God and St. Anthony Catholic Church.
