At the May 10 meeting of the Sumpter Township board, there was a question about a recent arrest inside a party store. Don Pittman asked about the arrest that was resisted and the subject got tased on the floor.
His question: Since there is an in-door and an out-door at the front of the building, shouldn’t the police have waited until he came outside to arrest him instead of making a mess inside? He stated he didn’t know all the details and was just asking.
Supervisor Morgan and Police Chief Luke responded. Chief Luke said he wasn’t there but he saw the bodycam recording of the arrest and the officer took proper action.
He said the subject was wanted, put under arrest, didn’t like that, and he was tased. They sent the tapes to the Prosecutor’s office and it issued felony warrants. The person is in jail on $150,000 bond. Chief Luke said at the end of the day neither the subject nor the police officer was injured.
Pittman replied that Sumpter has a good police department and he didn’t want Sumpter to get a bad rap. There was discussion on other things the police officers have done to help citizens.
“We have got great cops,” said Deb Callison. “We’ve got to keep and support them. Glad we’re not in their shoes.” Lots more comments. This community loves its police department.
