WXYZ Channel 7 News reported Tuesday night, Oct. 15, that one case of MRSA had been confirmed at Edgemont Elementary School in Belleville.
Early Wednesday, Oct. 16, officials at the Van Buren Public Schools Board office could not be reached by the Independent for comment.
According to WXYZ, the MRSA case was discovered at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and cleaning crews were at the school Tuesday night. The school was open for classes on Wednesday morning.
Later, school officials said they sent out electronic notices to parents Tuesday evening and letters to all Edgemont parents on Wednesday.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureaus (MRSA) is a bacterial infection that sometimes affects school populations.
The Edgemont student reportedly had been seen by a medical doctor and because he was treated within 24 hours, she would be allowed to come back to school by by end of the week.
