On Saturday night, June 4, the Wayne County Fairgrounds shut down the carnival that was operating to welcome summer because of the juveniles who were fighting.
Van Buren Township Police Lt. Charles Bazzy said the fairgrounds was required to hire private security before the township allowed it to have a carnival, given the problem with fights in the past.
But, he said, a bunch of juveniles from other jurisdictions were fighting and the private security couldn’t handle it. He said they called Van Buren Township Police to handle it.
The police dispatch log for Saturday shows calls to Van Buren Police at 6:44 p.m. and 8:03 p.m.
On Sunday, the fairgrounds required those under the age of 18 to be accompanied by an adult in order to be admitted to the carnival. Lt. Bazzy said police did not get another call for help.
