CARLETON — The chief of police in Carleton was taken to a hospital after accidentally shooting himself while on a call Thursday.
Chief Roy Johnson was transported to the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, said Carleton Village President Larry Buckingham.
“It is a minor gunshot wound,” he said.
Carleton police were responding to a breaking and entering call of an occupied home in the 200 block of Oakville-Waltz Rd. Buckingham said Johnson slipped on ice and his weapon discharged with a bullet striking him in the foot.
“It was a through-and-through,” Buckingham explained.
The suspect was apprehended. Carleton was assisting Monroe County Sheriff’s Department on the call which was near I-275 on the Monroe County side of Oakville Waltz. Huron Township Police Department also assisted on the call. The chief is expected to be okay.
